Happy New Year 2010

I was so excited to shoot some fireworks today. However, luck is not on my side. This was the first time I shoot fireworks and we picked a wrong spot. The firework is so pathetic that we cant even see clearly.

It was a mess after I saw the first firework came out from the wrong place. I quickly re-composed my picture without having anytime to re-adjust my focus and shoot right away. The result is? Bad composition, bad focusing and I forgot to shoot in RAW.

Luckily we arrived that place earlier, so we decided to shoot some night scene of KLCC. Well, this is much more better than my firework pictures.

The Theme is Supposed to be Summer...

The theme is supposed to be summer, however, due to the bad weather & lighting, I have to shoot in available light only without using reflector (it will have no effect even you use it). Thus I changed to theme to something similar to autumn's low angle & diffused light.

Canon Photo Marathon 2009

Canon Photo Marathon is one of a major event in Malaysia's photography industry. This competition is open to public irregardless of what camera brands the participants are using. However, Canon users can join for FREE whereas others has to pay RM30.

I joined this event is only for the fun of it. I have never think of submitting my works as this would take whole day. Besides, I get a free T-Shirt and a cap.

I arrived the venue (Sunway Lagoon's Elephant Walk Entrance) around 7:20am. The event kicks offs officially around 10am. So, we basically wasted some time sitting there and waiting. However there are some gains...

I got to test some lenses on my 1000D. Canon set up a booth in front of the stage, providing participants to touch and play with some of Canon's newest and top-line camera bodies and lenses.

(This was shot using my 1000D body + EF 100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens. The range of the lens is cool, but its too heavy an the IS dosen't seem to help much on slow shutter speed, i.e. 1/60s and below)

While waiting, I spotted this guy is shooting video using 5D Mark II (some sort of pimped up version + some unknown accessories). Well I know nothing about videography.





The 3 themes for today are:

1) Splash
2) Red
3) Shooting in Progress

I basically feel these themes boring. We are required to wear the T-Shirt throughout the event. So, this is what you see:







So I ended up hanging around inside Sunway Lagoon and exploring various parts of the amusement park. My favorite is off course the Wildlife Park. It's a mini zoo basically and I got to shoot some birds in close distance. I only have kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS) as a zoom lens at this moment.

My First Photonian Gathering

I joined this group 1 month+ ago and haven't meet any of its members until today. There are 5 people (Avex, Charlotte, Ben, Yen Sheng & me!) attending the gathering.

Surprisingly, Avex live so near to me at SS2 Jasmine Tower. My another photography friend ("photokaki") - Clown (a.k.a. Frankie) live there too. And Avex is just living a unit below Clown. What a small world. So I fetched Avex and his friend to Putrajaya to meet up with Charlotte & Ben.

We arrived a bit early than expected. So we started to shoot around. The weather was bad as its too hazy and the timing (5pm) is just not right. Most of my pics come out flat and lack of contrast.










Moments later, Charlotte & Ben has arrived. We continued to shoot around and we finally decided to have our dinner at Nando's in Alamanda Putrajaya.

Didn't expect Charlotte likes to eat hot & spicy food to the extreme extent. She even introduced me some places to have very very hot & spicy food.

After dinner, the sky is completely dark, and this is the perfect time for shooting essence of Putrajaya. We started from the another end of Perdana Putra which is the PICC.

Shooting night scene takes time as each photo takes you at least 20 seconds. So we can easily waste 30 mins.

We ended our session around 11pm as today is Sunday and most of us have to work/study on the next day. There are still many buildings we have yet to photograph. So that means this will not be the last time of us shooting Putrajaya.

DCIM 2009

DCIM is an abbreviation for Digital Camera · Imaging · Media

This event is actually a new event and planned (hopefully) to be held on a yearly basis. Well it's basically a "camera fair" with models and catwalk shows.

The size of this event is actually quite small, even smaller than my college's Career Fair...

The participating brands are not massive too, I only see Canon and Nikon, I couldn't find Sony, Olympus and such, even the big 3rd party photography gears manufacturers like Tamron and Sigma are not showing themselves too. A bit of disappointment here though.

I arrived around 1pm, hoping to shoot some models, but what I see is a bunch of enthusiastic photographers with some nice gears and ladder, yes, a ladder:





How am I supposed to get a clear shot? Well thanks to my Canon EOS 1000D with Live View function! Almost all shots are done through Live View. Who said Live View is useless eh?

Basically what I do is just enable the Live View, put my camera as high as possible and snap.

Its not easy to keep your hand steady in that situation:

Due to difficulties of photographing the models, I did not follow the event til the end. I ended up buying a tripod (which I needed) instead. Details of the tripod will be posted soon.
